Surgery went well

Just a very quick check in.

The surgery was a success. They replaced the discs in levels C4-C5 and C6-C7 and fused them together. The most painful part for me has been the discomfort in my throat from the breathing tube and the incision area. Nothing a little morphine can't handle.

I'm expected to be discharged either Thursday or Friday. Thank you to everyone that has sent well wishes. They have been a definite smile maker.

Notice about our Shipping Times

Our office will be closed Wednesday, Feb. 11 - 18 while I undergo major neck surgery. (for more information, read HERE) All orders received during this time will experience a slight delay in processing and shipment.

Have no worries. I have made arrangements to get orders out as quickly as possible while I'm gone. Our schedule will be as followed:

News about Custom orders

We wanted to post a status update on our plans for our made to order/custom sections.

Short version: We have still not set an exact date as to when we will begin taking new orders. We are projecting March 2, 2009 for our CUSTOM orders (you send us your fabric) section. Our made to order section will hopefully be shortly after that.

Long version: We are still in the process of trying to move into our new design studio. The build outs have take several weeks longer than expected (don't you love dealing with contractors and waiting days for permits??). The original completion date of 1/26 has came and gone. Yet we're still starring at unfinished walls.

Our contractor is telling us it will possible be Feb. 13 before he is completed with the build outs and that's if everything continues on schedule with no delays from the inspectors. Once he is done, we still have to apply for our occupancy permit and that is expected to take an additional 7-10 business days to obtain. Until then, we can't move anything in.
This whole process has been extremely frustrating especially since our original plans started back in Oct/Nov and should have been completed before the new year.

It's also been very frustrating on personal level, as I have been struggling with chronic back pain since the early summer and it has limited my ability to physically do any work and rely on others to get all of this done. MRIs and other tests have shown that I have 2 herniated discs in my neck, as well as 4 herniated discs in my lower back. I have undergone countless rounds of epidural spinal injections in both areas with little pain relief. The only option I have left for my neck is surgery (anterior cervical decompression/discectomy & fusion).

Originally this was scheduled (February 11) with the intentions that this move would be complete, but now it's ended up right in the middle of this chaos. Obviously the ideal thing to do is to reschedule it, but unfortunately my doctors and family feel that is not in my best interest to continue to put it off. The numbness and weakness in my hands and arms are only getting worse. The longer the nerves are compressed, the greater the chance these symptoms will not get better after surgery.

We are still trying to determine the best course of treatment for my lower back. Since I have already had back surgery in 1997 for this same problem, the options are limited since my spine is already unstable in this area. Monday (Feb. 2), I will go for a procedure that will tell them how many of the 4 herniated discs are actually causing all the pain in my lower back, hips and legs. We're hoping for only one or two. There are a couple of minor procedures that can be done if that's the case. My doctor is hoping to squeeze one of those procedures in before my neck surgery to gain some relief in my lower back so I am not suffering from both (recovering from the surgery & the current pain in my lower back) at the same time . If all 4 discs are the culprits, then the only thing they can do is to start fusing them together, which can't be done until I'm 2-3 months post-op from my neck surgery. Please send good thoughts our way. I'm terrified beyond belief.

CPSC Grants One Year Stay of Testing and Certification Requirements for Certain Products
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission voted unanimously (2-0) to issue a one year stay of enforcement for certain testing and certification requirements for manufacturers and importers of regulated products, including products intended for children 12 years old and younger. These requirements are part of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), which added certification and testing requirements for all products subject to CPSC standards or bans.

Significant to makers of children’s products, the vote by the Commission provides limited relief from the testing and certification requirements which go into effect on February 10, 2009 for new total lead content limits (600 ppm), phthalates limits for certain products (1000 ppm), and mandatory toy standards, among other things. Manufacturers and importers – large and small – of children’s products will not need to test or certify to these new requirements, but will need to meet the lead and phthalates limits, mandatory toy standards and other requirements.

The decision by the Commission gives the staff more time to finalize four proposed rules which could relieve certain materials and products from lead testing and to issue more guidance on when testing is required and how it is to be conducted.

So what this means is we can continue on with business as usual and see what happens in the next 12 months. We have already received certificates from all of our vendors that the fabrics and other products used to construct our cart covers comply the new total lead content limits (actually there is NO lead used in the production of the fabrics we use and there was less than .1% of phthalates found- duhhh, not big news to us).
So even through we have certificates from all of our vendors stating that they meet the new lead content limits and know our product compiles with the CPSIA, as this current law is written, we are still required to obtain our own testing and certification that our finished product meets these new lead contents limits. Which is SOOOO crazy because we do nothing to our supplies except cut it, sew it and package it. Why do we need to spend an additional $1000-4000 for EACH BATCH (each fabric, each run) to get the same results? This is the uproar that many small business owners like ourselves are trying to understand.

We will continue to follow the developments in the next coming months and hope that amendments can be made to protect small businesses all over America.

These new developments have allowed us to proceed with purchasing new fabrics for 2009, however we will wait until the above mentioned move into our new design studio is complete (we don't want to move more equipment and inventory than we have to).

About our Made to Order/Custom Slots

Our sewing team has been feverishly working out the details for when we will begin taking new 'made to order"/custom orders and we have not yet set a date as to when we will be re-opening these slots.

We are also busy with a pending move into our new design studio projected in the next couple of weeks and we will probably wait until that move is complete before doing so.

Meanwhile, we are busy with keeping our In-Stock/Ready to ship inventory stocked with some great fabrics that we need to clear out before our big move.

Also on our minds is the upcoming new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) that goes into effect on Feb 10, 2009. We are trying to determine if our product falls under this new law and what steps we need to take to comply. For more information, here are few helpful links.

The way the current law is written, it's all very confusing and crazy, if you ask me. I agree with protecting our children and agree with the basic concept of the idea. However, there are so many flaws and it's going to drive so many small businesses under.

With all of this hanging over our heads, we have not purchased any new fabrics and have asked our fabric vendors to hold our recent orders of new fabrics that we pre-ordered at Market in Oct., until we have a better idea of what our plans are.

Walk Now for Autism

The KozyPal Family is participating in Walk Now for Autism to help find a cure for autism. Autism is the second most common developmental disorder in the United States affecting one in every 150 children born today. Despite some promising discoveries, the cause of autism is unknown and a cure does not exist. Our 4 year old son, Peyton is on the autistic spectrum with a diagnosis of PDD-NOS and this event is very near to our hearts.

Research is crucial. Every 20 minutes another child is diagnosed with autism. Not only must we find ways to improve the quality of life for children and adults with autism, but we also must find a cure, and soon. Walk Now for Autism is our chance to make a difference in the fight against autism by raising money for autism research and heightening public awareness.

Our Hurricane Ike Story

Our Ike adventure started early on Thursday morning when the alarm went off at 5 am. My husband doesn't use the standard "beep beep" alarm, but rather the radio blaring at the highest volume. Before he had a chance to turn it off, I heard the reports of school closings, so I knew then that the storm had made a turn over night.

By 7 am, we had our orders to evacuate. We were undecided if we would actually leave, but started securing the house and my office. We already had supplies from the previous week because of Gustav. By 2 pm, we were done and I finally made the call to get out of town. The thought of sitting in a house with no power for an unknown number of days made me twitch. Of course, we missed our chance to get out. The freeways were already jammed pack. We continued to watch the TranStar site throughout the afternoon and decided at 5 pm to make a break for it.

With 2 vehicles loaded, 3 kids, 1 dog, a turtle and our supply of food and water, we hit the road for the 7 hour drive to my cousin's family ranch in San Saba, TX (NW of Austin). Her in-laws graciously invited us to ride the storm out with them. I left Houston with a very heavy heart. A couple of hours earlier my daughter, Kierstyn and her dad decided to ride the storm out in their Pearland home, as did my mom and dad (who was also in a mandatory evacuation zone) in Friendswood. Something about not being together with all of my family bothered me.

At 2 am on Friday... after 4 potty stops, 1 sick dog (love finding out the hard way my sweet Ellie gets car sick) and an escort down the LONGEST dirt road I've ever driven...


we arrived.


I sent a text to my mom and friends to let them know we arrived safely and that "we weren't in Kansas anymore" :P

With daylight a few hours later, I quickly realized why my cousin loves to go up there any chance she can. The sights were breath taking and there were times I forgot about what was going on back at home.



We woke up to these outside our cabin every morning.



We all made the best of things. The kids did a little fishing, some water skiing..until they ran out of gas...LOL



The little guys got to ride a couple of these through out the weekend helping with plowing the hay fields and grating the dirt roads.



What boys do best! I swear my kids had a ring of dirt around their mouth for a WEEK. They played so hard.



Matthew kept telling us "this is like a vacation"



We never got rain the entire weekend. It was a little cloudy and breezy...but this next photo shows all we saw of Ike in San Saba on Saturday. I was happy to get messages from family and friends that stayed in Houston they were all fine. No one with major damage. Just suffering through the heat with no power.



Sunday, we all decided to head back to Houston. My husband had left the day before to get back to check on things and start cleaning up. We had the ranch closed up and back on the road by 2pm. Traffic was smooth sailing and we stopped every hour or so to top off our gas tanks. Good thing. By the time we hit Hempstead, the lines for gas were never ending. Very few gas stations had power AND gas.

I hit Baytown around 8 pm and my stomach was turning flips as I exited off I10. The town was dark and very eery.



By the time I pulled in my driveway...it was dark out and probably a good thing. I had seen more than I could stand.



Monday - Daylight was scary. We surveyed the back yard. Couldn't see much with this thing in the way...



I was so amazed and thankful it fell in the direction it did and NOT on our house. We lost a couple of shingles, part of our fence, but nothing major.



Tyson helped take pics for insurance purposes. :P



Then I headed to the office to see it for myself. Brandon had already given me the report...but seeing it first hand was another story.



Aside from the obvious trees and debris in the parking lot...the roof... I quickly noticed the office looked different. Then realized the huge shade tree that was in back of the office on the left was no longer there. It laid down at the roots towards the back of the property. WOW, another lucky break.



But not so much on the inside.





I was just thankful the water was contained only to the front foyer/showroom and a couple of other rooms. All of which I had moved all the contents to the back of the building before we left.

Then I headed to meet Brandon and my brother-in-law to check on their parent's home in Mont Belvieu (15 mins up the road). and the tears started rolling as I pulled up to their house.



What are they looking at you ask?



They were trying to figure out how to find the front door.



They were so very lucky. 6 trees down and 3 that were barely standing. Not one tree on the house.



And daylight between the carport and Grandma's car.



Reports are that 2 twisters went through their neighborhood after the eye passed over. The little town took a bad hit.



Peyton kept insisting "daddy broke our house (no power)...daddy broke the tree" lol AND SEE. See the ring of dirt :P



Driving around town made things seem unreal. You see things like this on TV...but not in your town. Your backyard.

This use to be a 2 story hotel near I10. It was in early construction with only the framing complete, but it's ruble!



All I could think was AMEN!!!



We regained power late Tuesday. I felt horrible calling friends and family telling them we had power before them. One of our seamstresses is still without power almost 2 weeks after the storm hit. Same for my brother-in-law a few miles down the road.

It's hard to drive around town. Everyone is trying to get back to normal. The FEMA pods are gone, but the Red Cross is still here and serves hot meals from 11:00 to 6:30 everyday. Sides of the road are litered with dried out trees and limbs waiting for the city to come through to haul debris away.

Today I made my monthly trip to Office Depot for supplies and had my stomach drop to my knees. "DUE TO HURRICANE IKE, CLOSED TILL FURTHER NOTICE". Roof and water damage. Same for the other stores in that shopping strip. Baytown got hit pretty hard, but I can't imagine what residents in Galveston are feeling. So many places that my family has frequented for years...are just GONE!
